What's in Your HUD with Sam Butters (nzlking)

We sat down with online tournament grinder Sam "nzlking" Butters to get his thoughts about poker software.  Nzlking currently has $105,667 in 936 online tournament cashes tracked on PocketFives, where he is ranked #10 in New Zealand.

PokerSoftware:  What poker software are you currently using while playing poker online?

Nzlking:  I currently use PokerTracker 4 and TimeMojo.

PokerSoftware:  How does TimeMojo help you while playing online poker?

Nzlking:  TimeMojo monitors online poker tables for timing tells and also has a function that allows me to act across all my tables very fast, while providing a randomized delay for the action. I do not currently use the software for timing tells and purely use it for my own timing randomization.  The software randomly makes my action time be between five and eight seconds whenever I c-bet.

PokerSoftware:  When did you start using PokerTracker 4 and how important is it to your game?

Nzlking:  I started using it in June 2014.  PokerTracker 4's HUD is very important for every aspect of my gameplay.  This software helps me decide how to choose the right players to play aggressively against pre-flop by identifying someone's RFI.  For example, if it's too high, they are opening too wide.

The software also helps me determine how often people fold to c-bets, which allows me to decide also how to approach a hand post-flop.  I can even make quick assumptions on a random player's ability based on their VPIP/PFRs.  So yes, the HUD is extremely important to my play.

PokerSoftware:  Can you please share your HUD with us line by line?

Nzlking:  1st line: Live BB amount ---> Hands ----> Raise First In

2nd line: VPIP ---> PFR ---> 3Bet Preflop ---> Fold to PF3b after raising ---> Call F CB in 3b pot

3rd line: CB Flop ---> Cbet Turn ---> Cbet River

4th Line: Fold to Flop Cb ---> Fold to T CB ---> Fold to R CB

5th line: Preflop Limp% ---> PF Limp Call% ---> PF Limp Fold % ---> PF Limp Raise %

My HUD stats have many different colors to make the HUD look a litter nicer.  Also, the HUD display type is set to "lower opacity until mouse-over" just so that I don't have busy tables.

PokerSoftware:  Do you use the pop-ups?

Nzlking:  I use the tools pop-up fairly often.  Some of the things that I find useful in them are my opponents' VPIP and RFI from each position.  This helps me create 3-betting ranges when they open from each position.  Also, if someone's VPIP is too high from the blinds, I will make my open sizes larger to stop this or get more value.  These are the two main stats I use via pop-ups, but I might check out other stats if they become appropriate for certain situations.

PokerSoftware:  Do you currently use any poker training sites?

Nzlking:  When I first started to play online poker, I signed up for CardRunners.  They had some useful beginner videos that introduced me to many aspects of the game.  I then shifted into Pocarr, which is an elite backing stable.  I was backed by them so that I could learn from some of their better players and also have access to their video libraries and private forums.

I now use Run it Once, which is costing me almost $100 per month, but it's definitely worth it. There are videos for every aspect of MTTs, ranging from its high-stakes, in-depth, deep stack play to random eight-table live sessions based on simple ABC poker. This training site has helped me immensely, so I credit my success to them!
